International Work & Service

Links to International Work and Service Programs

The International Work and Service program provides students with an opportunity to engage in service-learning, paid or unpaid internships abroad. To be competitive in the modern global economy, students need to acquire specialized skills to perform in an international job market. International Work and Service is a valuable means through which students can learn a second language and become literate in a culture other than their own.

In the past, students have volunteered as environmental protectors in South American Rainforests; taught English to young students in Japan; engaged in biological research in Bermuda; and, provided childcare to families in Europe; while earning credit at UMBC.

Opportunities exist in almost every country and in most academic areas. The Center's International Work and Service Library has information on many different programs, international student loans, fundraising suggestions, international health insurance and more. International Work and Service opportunities exist for fall, spring, summer and 12-month placements. Occasionally, winter term placements can also be arranged.

Requirements
Individual programs (either internship or service-learning) have specific requirements or restrictions in addition to Shriver Center minimum requirements. These include:

  • 2.5 GPA
  • Sophomore standing or above
  • Completion of at least one full semester at UMBC
  • Status as a full-time degree seeking student
Important Considerations
1. Passport: In order to enter a foreign country you will need a valid passport. If you do not already have a passport or if your passport will expire during your stay, you will need to apply for a new one as early as possible. The process normally takes 6-8 weeks. You can pick up an application at your local post office.

2. Work Permit: If you elect to pursue a paid work experience, it is necessary to obtain a legal work permit. This is a lengthy and difficult task. Short term work visas are often granted to college students and recent college graduates. This visa costs approximately $225.00, and is certainly a worthwhile investment.

3. Academic Credit: While participating in the International Work and Service program, you will be enrolled in a zero credit pass/fail course that will note your international experience on your transcript. You can also speak to your Shriver Center advisor about linking your international experience to credit through an academic department.
