TOP 10 IWS Programs (as judged by the 2005 Coordinator)
IAESTE United States: This membership organization is dedicated to developing global skills in tomorrow’s technical leaders through international exchange, leadership training, global skill development, and technical education. Paid technical positions are available abroad in 80+ member countries in industry, research institutes, universities, consulting firms, labs, and other work environments.
The International Partnership for Service Learning: Offered in 14 countries, IPSL programs unite academic and volunteer service, giving students a fully integrated abroad experience. Present sites include India, Ecuador, Israel and the Czech Republic.
Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs: Academic-community partnerships for social change; program features field-based learning and internships that encourage civic involvement. Sites include Ecuador, Northern Ireland, Scandinavia, Bangladesh and the U.S.
VIDES: Volunteer service for 3-12 months in 80+ countries. VIDES is affiliated with the Catholic Church but people of all faiths (as well as those who do not practice any religion) are encouraged to apply. VIDES service does not have a spiritual component.
Council on International Educational Exchange: Teach in China, Thailand or do volunteer service in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin or North America.
Habitat for Humanity: International’s Global Village Program Team members work alongside members of the host community, raising awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent, affordable housing worldwide.
Global Volunteers: Partners in Development: Participate in 1-3 week opportunities in 18 countries, working on community development issues.
Cross Cultural Solutions: Choose from nearly 200 start dates, lengths of stay of 1-12 weeks, and 10 countries: Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Peru, Russia, Tanzania and Thailand. Staff welcomes you to the CCS Home-Base and ensures that all of your needs are met - from safety and lodging to perspectives and insight about the local culture.
Volunteers for Peace: International Workcamps: Membership supported non-profit with no political or religious affiliations. Sponsors intercultural education, citizen diplomacy and volunteer service in the U.S. and abroad.
Peace Corps: Generally offers 2-year community development opportunities with stipend in 80+ countries. Also check out Masters International program for an inside track to graduate school combined with volunteer service.
